Seeing AMD Earlier

Imaging, Biomarkers, and Functional Testing

Visual acuity and ophthalmoscopy do not always tell us when AMD is beginning to change. By the time the disease becomes obvious, we may have missed an opportunity to better classify risk, educate the patient, and establish a meaningful baseline.

This course examines how fundus photography, OCT, OCTA, fundus autofluorescence, and dark adaptation contribute different pieces of the clinical picture. We will discuss when each test adds value, how to recognize iRORA and cRORA, and why nonexudative macular neovascularization may be present before fluid or hemorrhage develops.

You will learn how to:

  • Recognize structural and functional signs of early AMD
  • Interpret OCT biomarkers associated with progression
  • Connect iRORA and cRORA with geographic atrophy
  • Identify when OCTA, FAF, or dark adaptation answers a question that photography and OCT cannot
  • Build a clinically useful testing sequence without ordering every test on every patient

The goal is not simply to perform more testing. It is to know what question needs to be answered and select the test most likely to answer it.
