Electroretinography in AMD

Looking Beyond Visual Acuity

AMD affects more than the letters a patient can read on an acuity chart. Structural imaging may show us what the retina looks like, but it does not always tell us how well the retina is functioning.

This course explores the clinical role of electroretinography in AMD, including full-field flicker ERG and multifocal ERG. We will discuss amplitude, implicit time, localized versus pan-retinal dysfunction, and how ERG findings can complement—not replace—imaging and the clinical examination.

You will learn how to:

  • Distinguish among the major types of ERG testing
  • Interpret amplitude and implicit-time findings
  • Recognize functional abnormalities that may not be reflected in central visual acuity
  • Understand why AMD may involve broader retinal dysfunction
  • Integrate ERG with OCT, OCTA, photography, symptoms, and visual acuity
  • Recognize the limitations of ERG as a standalone diagnostic or progression test

The point is not to use ERG simply because the technology is available. It is to understand when objective functional information changes how we evaluate or follow the patient.
