Measuring Carotenoid Status in Clinical Practice

Skin carotenoid scores and macular pigment optical density are often discussed as though they measure the same thing. They do not. Each test evaluates a different biological compartment, uses a different methodology, and answers a somewhat different clinical question.

This course examines skin reflection spectroscopy, commercially available MPOD testing, and the research-grade methods commonly used in carotenoid studies. We will explore correlation, agreement, repeatability, and the difference between measuring carotenoid status and diagnosing or monitoring AMD.

You will learn how to:

  • Explain what skin carotenoid and MPOD measurements actually represent
  • Compare commonly available clinical testing methods
  • Understand how diet, supplementation, absorption, and timing may influence results
  • Evaluate repeatability and measurement limitations
  • Use longitudinal trends more appropriately than isolated scores
  • Discuss results with patients without overstating what the test proves

These technologies can improve nutritional conversations and help monitor change, but only when we understand what the number means—and what it does not mean.

Enroll now and use carotenoid testing with greater clinical confidence.
